Abstract
As far as we know, an experiment on the effect of book trailers has not yet been presented to a broader academic public. Our findings: Book trailers are – compared to blurbs – better able to make clear to the future reader which genre the book they are considering buying belongs to. In our experiment, however, they were not able to increase the interest in reading more strongly, nor did they manage to make a book seem more exciting in the comparison carried out to blurbs.

Christian Schäfer-Hock M.A. is a research assistant, doctoral student and lecturer at the Department of Communication at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz/Germany since 2009. His fields of research are journalism and the content of journalistic products, journalistic formats, political communication, media politics, the history of communication studies, and the sociology and philosophy of science. Daniela Hartmann has a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Film Studies. The title of her bachelor thesis was „How do Book Trailers affect the recipient’s minds? Results of an online experiment”. Since 2011, she has been working towards a Master’s degree in Communication Science at the Department of Communication at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz/Germany.
